Books

I just read The Hobbit. It was very okay. The progression of the story was really weird. Basically serialized instead of one continuous cohesive story.

Speaking of band biographies, NOFX's is the best one I've read. Not sure if anyone here cares about them as a band. They're important enough to me that I've considered having their logo be my first tattoo.

The biography is super well written and ridiculously entertaining. They got into some unbelievable crazy shit. Their drummer in particular seems like a psychopath.

I finished The Count of Monte Cristo yesterday. It only took me about 10 years to read, but it was an entertaining story. I don’t know why I’m always surprised by how good classic older fiction is.

I love those guys.
1991-2000 were their golden years. I love everything made in that time period.

The stuff before sucks because it's too sloppy and the stuff afterward has no vitality. But those years, man.

Did you read the Uncut or Abridged? I read the Uncut, and I don't feel like I would have lost much by reading the shorter version. Super entertaining though.

You should read some Victor Hugo if you haven't already. I feel like he has a lot of the same qualities as a storyteller Dumas, but his stories have more social weight to them.

Have not read any Hugo. Obviously he’s got some well known stuff. I will make it to him eventually on my quest to read stuff I should have already read.

My friend bought this for me last year. So much fucked-up violence in the 80s LA punk scene.

Fat Mike is an interesting guy, for certain.

One of the questions at Monday night trivia was "what is the English translation for Les Miserables?"

Not the host's most inspired effort, I do declare

Just finished Fellowship of the Ring. It ended very abruptly. These Tolkien books seem far more focused on world building and lore than the actual characters and plot.

I'm in the minority, but I think the Silmarillion is the best Tolkien book. Really a collection of short stories in a world much more epic than that of LOTR or the Hobbit. Little slow to start, and the language is more 'biblical', but cooler overall.

I just read The Last Day of a Condemned Man by Victor Hugo. Really fantastic book that makes a strong case against the death penalty without being preachy.
