Duke Recruiting General Discussion

Oct 19th is huge with Jones, Okafor and Winslow there (not to forget Towns). Crazies better be in good form.

I wonder if they'll stay for the football game, now that, worst case, it will be a 7PM game vs. UNC for the first bowl game in 18 years. Should be a fun weekend to be around campus.

Interesting quote on how Cal is approaching him:

Coach Cal is just really cool. I liked him. One thing that he told me that I thought was cool was when he said he’s 50-something years old and that he doesn’t need to call me every day. He said he would if I needed him to, but then he was like, “What do we really have to talk about? I want you at my school and that’s that.” It just showed me how laid-back he is.

I wonder if he's like that with everybody.

Honestly, I always found the idea of calling kids incessantly to be weird. I wouldn't have wanted that. But I understand not all kids are the same.

Anyway, biggest recruit right now is Nichols. After that I'll put mental energy into 2014.

yup, especially the incessant texting and tweeting. I can't even imagine that coming from 30-50 year old men to high schoolers. In any other context it's just really really bizarre.

Just my opinion but Nichols will most likely back up Marshall who will be a 3rd year sophomore in 2014. Unless of course Austin really blows up this year. If you put Marshall in the middle for defense, boards and passing and surround him with Hood, JParker, Sheed, Jones, Murph, Amile, Semi and Cook then watch out. Thats a really deep and talented group.

I completely agree with ex-Lhys. Jabari is very talented, and would be a go-to-guy, but just seems to mess up the forward rotation bad (think Hood/Murphy/Ojeleye/Amile for two spots, plus a senior Hairston). And while Hood can play SG... we kind of have Sheed/Matt Jones there. And Sheed could play some at the 1, but... we have Quinn and Tyler at point. So it really is those 5 guys for 2 spots. And only Marshall Plumlee at center.

We need a Porker, not Parker.

My thinking is that we already have a bunch of wings but with the departure of Mason, we'll have Marshall and that's it (Jefferson and Hairston being PFs). However, if Nichols proves to small to play center, he may not be the solution either.

I just worry about Janari's overlap with Murphy, Hood, Semi, and to a lesser extent Jones and Sulaimon. Would hate to see a freshman or two get zero playing time and have his development stunted, or worse, feel the need to transfer, because of a player who is only going to be in school one year. To my mind, the likelihood of winning a title is always low so it doesn't outweight player development and good chemistry.

We my not need him position wise but we need his skill. Every team does. I honestly see Nichols as a backup to Marshall and possibly/hopefully Okafor after that.

I dont think a one and done player would make a player transfer.

Okafor seems high on us. But it seems like big men always are when they are a year or two out. Then the negative recruiting really kicks in.
