Food and Alcohol

Capital Grille tonight so good. Also, uptown Charlotte is really growing on me.

Love uptown Charlotte. Stay there every time I go. Capital Grille there is really good.

Also, tried Angels Envy bourbon this week. Really good.

Tried Copa last weekend, which is what Old Havanna became when they moved into a bigger space further west on Main. Was very disappointing, honestly. My friend ordered some lukewarm chicken thing that I swear was just shredded chicken mixed with some Cholula.

One of those things where the food was nothing special, quantities weren't very large, but they've pushed prices for their dishes/sandwiches up to the $11-14 range - plus tip, since it's no takeout anymore. I don't understand why they're targeting that niche of the Durham restaurant market, when they're still the same casual-lunch-quality food and there's so much competition. Similarly priced places like Luna, Viceroy and Gonza are just way better and more creative with what they do. Even Mateo is cheaper for lunch.

If I want something like no-frills Cuban, I want to be able get a sandwich for less than $10, and don't want to have to be waited on and tip. I hope it survives, but I can't think of an occasion where I would go back there, given their current concept.

I will say, in that lunch category, huge fan of Alpaca on 9th street. Rare combo of delicious, relatively healthy, quick, and cheap.

This beer is very good.

I've been to the brewery in SD. The space is monstrous. They claim it's the biggest restaurant in California.

I've been thinking about it for a while. I try to do things like reuse cups, carry canvas bags, make sure I recycle, etc. But going meatless would have a bigger impact than all of those put together.

This is why I'm vegan.

I know it is massively inefficient from an environmental/nutritional standpoint. I know I will be looked back upon the same way we look at slaveowners. I am disturbed by the fact that something like 70% of animal biomass is domesticated animals bred solely for mankind's appetite. But holy hell do I love meat. I have substantially reduced my intake, but consuming bacon, brisket, speck ham, hanger steak, venison backstrap, etc are, if not vital, certainly meaningful rituals in my life. I want to get better, but it's akin to trying not to objectify women (at some level). The mind is no match for the brutal force of the body.

It's just speck and it loses to prosciutto, bellota and pancetta, but it's still great.

Nah. Speck only loses to Bellota, but barely, and it costs 80% less. Only really well-heeled folks like hedge fund managers and doctors eat Jamon Iberico on the reg.

I'll be eatin' that shit in Barthelona in 4 days, bitch!

I've considered trying a vegetarian diet before. The problem is that I find most vegetables repulsive.
