2019 NCAA Tournament

With another decade of college basketball in the books, here are the overall tournament results for every program with a Final Four appearance since 2010:

School. Tournament Apps-Record-FF's-Titles
Duke 10 - 26-8 - 2 - 2
Villanova 9 - 17-7 - 2 - 2
UConn 4 - 13-2 - 2 - 2
Kentucky 9 - 31-8 - 4 - 1
UNC 9 - 24-8 - 2 - 1
Louisville 8 - 16-7 - 2 - 1 (15 wins, both FFs, and title vacated)
Virginia 7 - 13-6 - 1 - 1
Michigan St 10 - 21-10 - 3 - 0
Kansas 10 - 24-10 - 2 - 0
Michigan 8 - 19-8 - 2 - 0
Wisconsin 9 - 18-9 - 2 - 0
Syracuse 8 - 18-8 - 2 - 0 (4 wins vacated)
Butler 7 - 16-7 - 2 - 0
Gonzaga 10 - 19-10 - 1 - 0
Florida 8 - 18-8 - 1 - 0
Ohio St. 7 - 13-7 - 1 - 0
Oregon 6 - 13-6 - 1 - 0
West Virginia 7 - 11-7 - 1 - 0
Wichita St 7 - 10-7 - 1 - 0
VCU 8 - 8-8 - 1 - 0

South Carolina 1 - 4-1 - 1 - 0
Loyola 1 - 4-1 - 1 - 0

Duke had arguably the best overall tournament resume this decade, finishing tied for the most national titles with Villanova and UConn - whose overall resumes pale in comparison to ours - and winning the second most NCAAT games behind Kentucky. The Wildcats also finished with the most Final Fours. Thank God for UConn stopping them in 2011 and 2014 and Wisconsin in 2015. They definitely should have have won more than one title.

UNC also had a successful decade, but less so than 2000-2009, so we probably shouldn't complain too much. Both of Louisville's FF trips and their title were vacated, so they're not worth discussing, nor is UVA, who had the luckiest tournament run any of us will likely see in our lifetimes.

MSU made the second most Final Fours this decade, with three, so Izzo deserves to be called the Master of March, but he is the Fool of April, failing to win a single FF game in three appearances. I'd argue Kansas fared better in the NCAAT overall, winning more games and reaching the title game in 2012.

The biggest takeaway for me is that even with the Lehigh and Mercer disasters, and failing to make a single FF in the last three years with stacked teams, Duke still had a good run in the NCAAT over the last 10 years. I think we'd all feel much better about it had even one of the 2017-19 teams reached the FF, or had UNC failed to win the title, but it was a successful decade overall.

We're also unfairly comparing this decade to a brief window nearly 30 years ago.

Fucking UConn, man. No one's been luckier when they have made the tournament than them.

Meh, their two titles this decade don't bother me too much, as Kentucky would've won in 2011 and 2014 otherwise, which would've been a far worse outcome. Their 1999 and 2004 ones though? Those will infuriate me for the rest of my life.

Also I will say, them languishing in the American now is karma for their insanely lucky 15 year run.

For reference, here's the splits from 2000-2009:

School. Apps - Record - FFs - Titles
UNC 8 - 26-6 - 4 - 2
Florida 8 - 20-6 - 3 - 2
Kansas 10 - 26-9 - 3 - 1
Michigan St 10 - 25-9 - 4 - 1
Duke 10 - 23-9 - 2 - 1
Uconn 8 - 20-7 - 2 - 1
Maryland 7 - 16-6 - 2 - 1
Syracuse 7 - 13-6 - 1 - 1
UCLA 8 - 20-8 - 3 - 0
Arizona 10 - 17-10 - 1 - 0
Texas 10 - 17-10 - 1 - 0
Illinois 9 - 15-9 - 1 - 0
Wisconsin 10 - 15-10 - 1 - 0
Memphis 6 - 14-6 - 1 - 0
Oklahoma 8 - 13-8 - 1 - 0
Louisville 7 - 12-7 - 1 - 0
Oklahoma St 7 - 11-7 - 1 - 0
Villanova 5 - 11-5 - 1 - 0
Georgetown 4 - 9-4 - 1 - 0
Ohio St 6 - 8-6 - 1 - 0
Indiana 7 - 8-7 - 1 - 0
LSU 5 - 7-5 - 1 - 0
Georgia Tech 4 - 6-4 - 1 - 0
Marquette 6 - 6-6 - 1 - 0
George Mason 3 - 4-3 - 1 - 0

We had the fifth best decade from 2000-2009, while UNC finished at the top of the pile. 2010-2019 was much better. The second best decade under K. Nothing will ever top 1990-1999, though, when we won 2 titles, made 5 FFs, and won 32 NCAAT games.

What's crazy about the '90s is that it's still that good despite 95-97 arguably being the worst period of Duke basketball.

Need some jaded political writer to put together a piece showcasing the obvious positive correlation between how much a media personality shamelessly gushes and fawns over UVA basketball and how much their livelihood is exclusively dependent on the relevance of college basketball.

What's funny is that the most utilitarian and personally beneficial behavior for someone who is dependent on the marketing success of college ball would be to act as a massive Duke homer - i.e what every other fanbase thinks the media already acts as - since it's abundantly clear that the success and relevance of Duke basketball drives the sports' ratings and interest much, much more than any other single factor in the sport by a wide margin. But most of these short-sighted fuckers who are now the representative media voices and ambassadors of the sport are so steeped in the insular CBB fanboy culture of hating Duke for whatever reason that they can't even come close to acting in their own self interest.

Even dumber is that UVA basketball represents a White Knight for these fuckers - who realize on some level and are massively insecure of the fact that every year CBB continues to erode shares of viewership to other sports - because they see UVA as emblematic to "what the sport once was" and the antithesis of the sports they are now losing ground to. Which I also think drives the resentment of Duke in the OAD pivot era, as they see that as emblematic of those other sports encroaching on the CBB they held sacred.

I would hate to be Mark Titus. There was nothing likable, let alone lovable, about this year's UVA team. I say that as someone who was very fond of Villanova's 2016 (thanks for beating UNC on a buzzer beater!) and 2018 teams.

It sounds like I'm in the minority here, but I actually think this particular Virginia team was fun and will be memorable for years to come. Guy, Jerome, and Hunter are three incredible players whose individual talents were what separated this iteration of UVA from the previous Bennett teams that underwhelmed in the tourney and all sort of blend together in the collective memory. They made some incredible plays tonight, and I think the latter two will be really good pros.

Also, Jerome's pass to Hunter on UVA's last possession in regulation was just so great and smart. Fuck the quick two.

I was happy they didn't go for the quick two, especially after the announcer (forget which one) suggested they should. I am so sick of that shit.

@DurhamSon that's great post. I find it really odd how badly everyone hated Duke and called Duke preachy when Duke was "doing things the right way". Now when Duke has Zion stuffing his nuts in everyone's mouth, they are emblematic of what's wrong in CBB. Total hypocrisy.

UVA fans (grads) are like UNC fans, but with more sanctimony. Fuck them.

UVA grads are absolutely arrogant as hell, but much more about the school - Mr. Jefferson's University - and how hard they party, than sports. They have come close, but never won anything of importance. The last few days in Richmond have been filled with such apprehension, very few fans really thought they would win. Carolina fuckheads, OTOH, are always spouting off about 'the Carolina way' and 'University of National Champions'. Even after being outed as a diploma mill, they still cling to some irrational sense of moral superiority. No comparison as to who is more insufferable IMO.

Title game ratings this decade:

2010 - 23.9m
2011 - 20.0m
2012 - 20.8m
2013 - 23.4m
2014 - 21.1m
2015 - 28.2m
2016 - 17.7m
2017 - 22.9m
2018 - 16.5m
2019 - 19.6m

No surprise that 2010 and 2015 had the highest ratings. I would not have expected the UNC-Villanova game in 2016 to be the second-lowest rated.

Wonder how that translates into $. I'd guess Zion adds 10-15mm viewers. Maybe more. How the fuck could they not have rigged it to get him there?
