Airing of Grievances Thread

School districts in deep blue areas, with easy voting by mail, giving the day off to students and staff. I see no reason for this. Just forces parents to take a day off from work while everyone sits home and doesn’t vote because they already voted weeks ago.

Good article that summarizes a lot of the reasons I quit. Everyone thinks dealing with the public sucks, I enjoyed that part of the job. The internal non sense became more than I could tolerate

So many interactions have pissed me off today. It all started this morning at the grocery store when two people's carts were turned sideways at the first two self-checkout kiosks. Between them, they were blocking the whole aisle. I stood there, assuming one of them would be a reasonable human and turn their cart. I was like 4 feet away from them. There's no way they didn't see me.

Eventually the person working the self-checkout approached. "Oh, good," I thought. "He's going to ask them to move their carts." Instead, he motioned for me to go around the entire self-checkout area and enter from the other side. It's obviously not like it was some long and arduous walk, but it pissed me off that he didn't handle it the appropriate way.

The day didn't get any better from there.

Actually, Food Lion doesn't even have self-checkout, which is definitely a strike against them. But at least their cashiers are generally fun to talk to, unlike Trader Joe's, which is just torture every time.

Fortunately I don't have many days like that but when I do it just puts me in a frame of mind that's hard to shake.

For example...

Couple of months ago my Spectrum bill shot up by $90. I called about it four times.

First time I was told they were late charges that had accrued. I said that's nonsensical because such charges would have raised the bill incrementally over time (the bill had been consistently within a range of $7 or so for a year or whatever, which the cs rep reviewed and could clearly see), and not only that, when I paid the bill each month, the balance was zero, which she could also see upon review.

She said give us a few days, we'll fix it.

Wasn't fixed.

Called back.

That time they told me the extra $90 was for a service call. I shot that down. They agreed, said it would be fixed.

It Wasn't.

Called back the third time. Repeat of the first call.

Said it would be fixed.

It wasn't.

Fourth time I called, repeat of one and three. But this time, the rep just kept repeating the same thing over and over about late charges. Like he was reading from a script.

Basically I said this isn't directed at you personally but your company can go fuck itself.

I switched to Direct TV. Still happy with the decision.

But that fourth call really agitated the hell out of me for, like, a few hours. And my description didn't do it justice. It was worse than you'd see on a sitcom.

Just sheer, unnecessary, flagrant incompetence.

Instacart was the worst I've had. I was trying to get a $30 first order bonus from a referral I received. I had an issue from trying to apply it to a pickup order rather than delivery. The $30 ended up getting replaced with a $10 discount. I had multiple conversations with customer service reps who gave various responses, all ultimately useless, but the first was the worst I've ever had. I was so annoyed with this guy and tilted to full smart-ass.

I pasted the back half of the convo below for anyone interested in bad customer service. It alternates between him and me, starting with him. No matter how rude you think I might sound, don't feel bad for him. He's an annoying, time-wasting liar. If he were just honest and said there's nothing he can do and I should consider it gone, I wouldn't have blamed him and could've moved on with my life. Plus, I was completely in the right. When I finally placed my order, Instacart sent an auto-email saying I received $30 in free groceries (wrong, although I should have).

The only credit I see is $10

Why is telling someone over the phone different from telling you here?
Why should I expect anything other than having to go through this same frustrating experience?
10:32 am

Correct you would get the same response
10:32 am

So your final response is you want me to waste my time with another person?
10:32 am

The only credit Available is $10
10:32 am

What about the prior promo
10:34 am

Expired
10:35 am

So you can see it?
What did it say?
(I know it expired 8/22 btw) [slight bluff but I think this was the correct date]
10:35 am

Expired May 21, 2023 12:29 AM EDT [he's completely lying, I literally had the promo on the account 30 minutes prior but just lost it when trying to finagle the $30 as a pickup discount instead]
10:35 am

lol
What about what you said earlier
Quote "the referral you made is
Give $30 - Get $10" [I brought this up because initially he claimed $10 was correct according to this language, and then later started saying the promo expired after I clarified to him that I was the one getting the $30 not giving. I was kind of just ignoring his lie about it expiring because if it expired then why would there be $10?]
If I was referred, and it was Give $30, and I applied the promo code to the account, why would there be $10 instead of $30?
Please keep in mind, this was a quote from you. I can send a screenshot if it would help. [he kept insisting on a screenshot of the promo that disappeared from my account as if I preemptively take those]
10:36 am

The only credit Available is $10

"the referral you made is
Give $30 - Get $10"?
10:41 am

Thank you for the enfo
info
10:45 am

You forgot it already? [rude, yes, but he was being sarcastic while lying to me]
I know this is taking a while but come on...
10:46 am

The only credit Available is $10
10:46 am

So what referral where you said "the referral you made is
Give $30 - Get $10"?
10:46 am

Correct
So you gave $40 and $10 was issued
That is the only referral I see

You know what really irritates me? Saying that something doesn't "move" you in a context where you actually mean something doesn't convince you. I'm hearing it a lot with sports teams. "The Phoenix Suns don't move me. They lack depth and their top end talent overlaps too much."

A sports team shouldn't "move" you. That's reserved for art, love, your daughter's birth, etc. I think I find it irritating because it's such of-the-moment Twitter speak. Usage like this seems to come out of nowhere and suddenly everyone on Twitter is using it like it's always been a thing. Find your own words.

But there's something about it that annoys me beyond it being borrowed language. I can't quite put my finger on it.

Duke's bureaucracy becomes more and more annoying every year. They take a huge cut from contractors like my laundry service in exchange for exclusivity. That's all well and good, but then they make it increasingly difficult to do our jobs. They keep closing off roads and lots and restricting our access more and more. It's not enough that we're giving you 10%+ of our sales? I don't know the exact figure, but it's at least that much.

I keep having to walk farther and farther because they're trying to force us into buying a $3000 parking pass. But even with that pass, there are areas I wouldn't have access to that I did just last year or the year before.

Every time someone wants to do a meeting on Microsoft Teams, I know it's going to go poorly. I don't understand why so many bureaucratic organizations insist on using it. I rarely have any buffering problems with Zoom. On Teams, there's inevitably someone who keeps freezing up. As an interviewer, it's incredibly difficult and awkward when you can't hear half of what the other person's saying.

I zoom with friends several times a week and it's always a flawless experience. My work meetings are on Teams and they're always shitty.

I either slept wrong or I pulled a muscle in my back while sleeping last night. This is likely a terrible omen for how Nebraska/Colorado game will go - lots of pain.
