College football (non-Duke)

Florida and Miami kick off the season in 19 days . . . from Orlando.

Really rubs salt in the wound that the Orange Bowl was demolished.

One of the greatest crimes in American sports and architectural history. What a beauty she was. And she had such an aura.

You can't just build charm and history.

I spent my first 14 years of my life going to that stadium. It was a dump. The Marlins stadium, built on its ashes, is a monstrosity.

Very interesting! I am a humongous fan of the Miami Hurricanes football team from the 80s/90s/early 00s. When Randal Hill ran through the tunnel at the Cotton Bowl against hated Texas . . . chills. Also- the fatigue game against Penn State and the demolition of Notre Shame . . . chills.

But yeah, they could have renovated the OB to get it up to 21st century standards while keeping the architectural bones, right? I never got to visit but the layout and exterior reminds me of the Rose Bowl and the LA Coliseum (before it was ruined)

Agree RE: Marlins Park. It sucks. It looks like something they'd build in Abu Dhabi. I want an Art Deco-inspired park on the water with palm trees and a gorgeous marquee. You may think I'm crazy, but I actually think the best feature of the new Marlins Park was the art installation in center. I thought it was unique if a bit kitsch. Of course they removed it.

Of those 3, only the ND game was at the Orange Bowl. I was also a huge fan of the Canes back in those days (but I was a kid/teenager).

Once they opened Dolphins Stadium in '87, the Orange Bowl was doomed, even though it took 20 years. The Orange Bowl was in a terrible location, the stadium was very old and there was no parking as the stadium was in a neighborhood even more than Wrigley. I still remember as a kid having to park in people's yards. You would give a random person $10 and YOUR KEYS and hope your car was there when you got back. The parking is essentially the same at the Marlins Park, though there are 2 small parking decks attached.

Joe Robbie Stadium/Pro Player Park/Pro Player Stadium/Dolphin(s) Stadium/Landshark Stadium/Dolphins Stadium/Sun Life Stadium/New Miami Stadium/Hard Rock Stadium also sucks.

I should mention, I despise the Dolphins almost as much as the Tar Heels.

I would have killed to have been around the Miami scene in the 80s. Even when I was really young (early 2000s), Miami was the shit. Robbed in that natty they lost to Ohio State. I can still hear Keith Jackson calling that shellacking of Nebraska.

And yes, Hard Rock Stadium is awful, made even more awful by the recent renovations. So damn ugly. We are speaking the same language RE: architecture.

Miami throwing the dick in the 1st half.

Touchdown rings are a nice touch to the turnover chain.

That game was a fucking comedy of errors. The last few minutes were among the worst I've ever seen in CFB. Both teams did their absolute best to gift the game to the other.

Awful. Miami has two freshmen OTs and a freshmen QB but the offensive play calling was still abysmal.

Spurrier's face when Franks threw that INT was hilarious.

So glad the season kicks off in earnest tonight.

Some interesting matchups.

Chip Kelly year 2 at UCLA versus Cincy
Ramblin' Wreck and The Champs
Arizona State starting a great young frosh against the alma mater of the GOAT coach
Holy War should be nasty

Few rambling thoughts about yesterday.

- I like MIchigan's new offense, but I really crave the I formation at the goal line and hate the spread. Maybe Harbaugh will adjust that; otherwise I think Josh Gattis' "speed in space" offense is going to be great. Charbonnet is also going to be very good. A little bit concerned about the defense being undersized and slow in certain spots. Ohio State staff is probably smart enough to exploit that like last year. Largely the same as it was under Urban.

- USC is fucked with Daniels out for the year. He wasn't very good, anyway, but I'd say that will ultimately seal the fate of Helton and Swann. Will be interesting to see if there is actual substance to the Meyer stuff. I think he'd absolutely accept that job if offered. Meyer at SC would produce ungodly results.

- Ohio State looked good. I like what they're doing with their defense. Simple, fast, and aggressive.

- It's only a matter of time before Taggart is canned in Tallahassee. I was wrong about that one. Hard to tell why he has sucked, but it's over. He has no line and no QB.

- Boise State, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Michigan State legit amaze me. Nobody in America is better at evaluating and developing (coaching). NOBODY.

Boise State starts a true freshmen QB against FSU at Doak and they come away with the win. Incredible. There were people who thought Boise would die with Dan Hawkins' departure. Then Chris Petersen. Now you've got Harsin. Reminds me of Miami hiring Schnellenberger, Johnson, and Erickson back-to-back-to-back.

And Wisconsin- jesus christ. Those South Florida guys have families. Gonna be a WAR at Camp Randall when they play Big Blue.

On the opposite end of the spectrum is Tennessee. I can't think of a former great power who's been consistently as bad for so long. USC wandered in the wilderness but eventually stumbled onto Pete Carroll. Oklahoma suffered through John Blake. Michigan had the end of Carr-Rich Rod-Hoke era, although I like Rich Rod. Alabama was an absolute laughingstock in the 90s/early 2000s, but then they landed the greatest coach of the post-integration period. Notre Shame hasn't won a natty in over 30 years, but they've at least been to the playoffs. Pretty crazy that the Clemson QB was born in Knovillle/lived in Johnson City and idolized Peyton Manning. Lol. Shows you how things change. Nothing is ever static.

I grew up with Josh Gattis and his brother Joe here in Durham. I remember going to daycare back in the day with them. Wild to see where he's at now.

Yeah he's progressed pretty quickly.

He played on a bunch of loaded Northern Durham teams. AJ Davis played in the secondary with him, who was a top 50 recruit nationally that ended up going to State and didn't amount to much of anything. Josh played safety at Wake Forest (I think he played safety), but has made his name coming up as an offensive guy (WR coach at Vandy and then Penn State).

Does anyone else think Cincinnati can present Ohio State some problems tomorrow?

Maybe it's just my inveterate hatred of the Buckeyes speaking. They'll probably win by 3-4 touchdowns now that I've made the post.
