Crate training does not have to be hard. In fact the hardest part is making it through the "whining" phase. Your puppy is going to whine because at first he/she doesn't want to be in there. They want to be with you. The idea is to make the crate a happy place and a place the puppy feels safe. The way I have always done this is by first introducing the crate to the puppy. Make the puppy go in on their own by placing treats in their. I always so "get in your box" when I want mine to go in and I will have treats in their already. Once they associate "get in your box" with treats I change it to giving him/her a treat after they get in. I did this with my Bichon and my Golden. Eventually all I have to do is say get in your box and they both run to their respective crates and get in. I follow them with a treat. It doesn't take long before they realize this is a good place to be. Don't make a big deal about them getting in or about letting them out other than the treat. Once they are in close the door. It doesn't take very long for them to become comfortable with it. As far as the whining goes, the length depends on the dog. My Bichon whined for 4 or 5 nights before stopping. My Golden only one night. My Bichon sleeps in the bed now but my Golden will go in her crate when I tell her and stay there. I don't even have to close the door anymore. Some people put their crate in the living room so their dog just get in when they want to. Others place it in other rooms or their bedroom. It is work they eventually learn. Just takes patience.

Thanks for the tips guys! I had tried the kong treat, (frozen, peanut butter, other treats) but he wouldn't touch it. Tried a different chew stick last night and he seemed to like it better.

We did an hour and a half session of being in the crate this morning. I lured him in, closed the gate and then walked out of the room, closing the door behind me acting as if I was going to leave. Sat on the couch the next room over to study and heard him whine and yelp for fortyfive minutes before he finally tired himself out and fell asleep. After an hour and a half of silence I opened my front door to make it seem like I was back, went to the bathroom and then went to my room and let him out of the crate without any fanfare. Grabbed his leash and took him outside so he could go, which he did. Only then did I praise him when we walked back home.

This afternoon he finally got in his crate voluntarily for one of his many afternoon naps, granted I was laying next to the crate reading at the time, and he fell asleep letting me go do some work in the other room. Whenever he falls asleep outside the crate I put him in there so he at least wakes up in it. I figure I have about a week of this in me before I go back to class, so trying to get the most of it in an admittedly short amount of time.

But all the hard work is so worth it. My little chunky guy had his first vet appt today. 7.5 weeks and already 16.5 pounds. He was strutting his stuff for all the nurses in the reception area, making me proud. Pups=total chick magnets

Dog parks are GREAT for tiring your dog out and socializing them. Some people don't like them but I can't recommend them enough. As soon as he has had his shots get him out there and don't coddle him. Put him in there and let him learn his place in the pack. He will gradually move up as he gets older and bigger. I do recommend one thing though. If there are water bowls at whatever park you go to make sure you empty them and refill them when you get there. Colitis can be picked up at the parks from dirty bowls and then they will be shitting and throwing up everywhere.

Wise, sadly not in Durham anymore.

P-fac, dick pics are via pm request only, but here are some of young Duke.

Thain, we will eventually get to dog parks but I think we are still a little bit aways from that.

I'm really frustrated this morning. I took him to my girlfriend's house yesterday might for the first time and it seems as if he completely unlearned everything we've learned in less than an hour of interaction with her four roommates. He pissed in their house twice, then pissed in my apartment twice this morning. Also started shitting inside this morning.... First time he's ever tried to shit inside. Thankfully I caught him before he made a mess and he finished outside in his regular spot, but what the fuck??

I guess that's what happens when you expose him to girls that have dogs of their own but don't train them at all.

He's cute! I love those big, floppy ears. Have lots of fun with little Duke. They grow up way too fast.

I wish there was a job where I could get paid well to play with puppies all day.

Yeah, I want a puppy, but I don't want any more dogs. Maybe someone would just rent me one?

Thanks! He's pretty cute right now, but that will probably change in the next couple of months. The estimate given is that he'll be between 80-85 lbs so he's gonna be a tank. Scary part is he was one of the smaller ones in his litter.

Physics, you should probably quit your med job and go work at petsmart. -Skitelz career advice

We've been at the beach the past couple of days. Had to share this one since I think it turned out really well.

My little 20# beagle mix whips my 85# lab mix all the time. Little Archer makes Zoubek whine, and I can't make myself feel sorry for Zoubek because he's just such a pussy.

^^ That was great! I loved when he almost fell over backwards. His eyes got all big like HOLY SHIT!!

This is scary stuff:

Deadly virus killing dogs

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -
A new virus is hitting dogs throughout the country, and if not treated, it can kill an infected animal in just days. There's no vaccine, it's highly infectious, and scientists still can't say with certainty how it's transmitted.

I won't be boarding any of mine any time soon.

Was thinking of getting a beagle around Christmas time. Had a 10 year old puggle(mix of pug, and beagle) that had to be put down because of health problems in August. They seem to have pretty good traits.

Just got a 9 week old Jackabee(mix of beagle and Jack). So far hasn't been too bad with barking, and everything. Should I expect a crazy dog? She's a bit hyper but not that bad.
