Just heard that Sandusky was sentenced to 30-60 years in prison, with the judge telling him that he could have given him hundreds of years, but that since he's 68 this is effectively a life sentence.

Thoughts?

Also, for those of you who know more about the law and our legal system, thinking back about things, it does seem like his trial happened very quickly. Am I completely off on this? Don't misunderstand, I'm not screaming conspiracy or that he's innocent...just surprised given that my impression in the past about high profile trials is that they tend to get delayed and dragged out much longer.

It was a bit fast, but I'm all for a speedy trial. Nearly every case in our little town gets delayed. For instance, a grocery clerk shot and killed another man right at the meat market on video and admitted it. He even walked over to the police station and turned himself in, saying he was the one they're looking for right then. He's still awaiting trial and wasting taxpayers dollars. As for Sandusky, he's getting off light for these crimes. I'm not one to stick people in prison, instead, believe in eliminating those who commit these types of crimes.

Meh. The cost of executing a prisoner is higher than the cost of a life sentence.

And that's for prisoners who weren't 68 when they were convicted...

No, the cost of years of appeals is high, the actual executiion is quick compared to appeals. The long, drawn out appeals process has nothing to do with justice. It's all about lawyers, judges, and $$$$.

I willingly admit hypocrisy on this...

I'm opposed to the death penalty for many many many reasons.

And yet, when faced with concrete situations such as this one, if it's truly proven that someone did such things I'm in favor of a very painful and (if possible) public execution. I call if the "Law and Order Effect;" i.e., I'm against the death penalty, but not when watching Law and Order SVU...
I'd describe that as a difference between individual and society, not hypocrisy. Individually, we all feel like killing someone painfully, if only for a moment, for things as trivial as not turning off your turn signal for miles on the interstate. But society needs to be better than that, to check those individual whims by being balanced and rational.
