So... I know he's gone, and obviously I don't hold it against him for leaving, but man, it does kind of suck. This is a rare case where I really do think it might be in everyon'es best interests for him to come back.
First of all, he'd be a 20 PPG scorer and NPOY candidate on a top 10 team next year, and benefit from the increased visibility and development that comes from that. Instead, he's going to rot on the bench in Minnesota or something.
Second, I think the "Well, he's so skilled anyway, his stock's not going to get much higher" argument is so lazy. The only things keeping him out of the lottery are 1) his body (6'1 with reasonable athleticism isn't necessarily too small, he's just so slight), 2) his defense, and 3) questions about his effectiveness against NBA size/athleticism, which is related to the first two. 1 and 2 are absolutely things he could improve/transform with another season.
Throw in a historically weak draft, and is he really going to go outside of the top 20 if he transforms his body, becomes a consistent defender, and has an All-American season? The projected 20-25 range next year has named like fucking Kennedy Meeks, Troy Williams, Brice Johnson and Theo Pinson. I mean, that's seriously who you're scared of dropping below??? Jake Leyman, Nigel Hayes, Demetrius Jackson are in the 10-20 range. Did they really look like better prospects this year, despite being older? This year you've got to beat Trey Lyles to get in the teens.
Good luck to him and he's earned the right to leave on a high notes with his buddies, but it sure would have been nice to catch a break here. Seems like we would have had a great pitch.
