College Basketball 2020-2021

Next year should be a very different landscape.

Michigan State graduates Cassius Winston, but they should still be solid overall with everyone else returning and a couple of decent recruits coming in. They also bring in Joey Hauser from Marquette. They should be a top 10 team again and finish at or near the top of the Big Ten. If Izzo can work his blue collar hard work magic this could be another Final Four team, with Rocket Watts running point.

Villanova doesn't have a single senior in their program, but their leading scorer, sophomore Saddiq Bey is projected to be a first round pick. Assuming he leaves, they should still be a top 10 team next year considering everyone else should be returning. If he returns, clearly a top 3 team.

Florida State is graduating Trent Forrest who averaged 11.6ppg, 4 rebounds per game, and 4 assists per game. Florida State also has a freshman (6'8 Patrick Williams) and a sophomore (6'6 Devin Vassell) who are projected as first round picks. Florida State has a commitment from Scottie Barnes who is ranked #6 in the country.

Memphis is losing James Wiseman who will be a top 3 pick, and Precious Achiuwa, who was a beast this year averaging 16 and 11. Outside of that, they have two freshman who each averaged 10ppg, and Boogie Ellis who averaged 8ppg. If they all return they should be pretty good but it would be unsurprising if one of those freshman left. On top of this, the Memphis 2020 recruiting class is a complete bust which has 0 commitments and their top target is Jalen Green is trending to Auburn.

Auburn is going to lose freshman Isac Okoro who is a projected lottery pick, and their leading scorer Samir Doughty who averaged 17ppg is graduating. In total, Auburn is losing 5 of their top 6 scorers to graduation, and Okoro is going pro. Auburn is bringing 5-star PG Sharife Cooper and are leading for Jalen Green, who is ranked #3 in the country. Bringing in both would be huge, but not sure they can be a Final Four threat with losing so much.

One team to watch is going to be Kentucky. Hagans and Maxey will likely both leave, but you have to assume a bunch of those guys will be back for another year, and they bring in the #1 recruiting class with two top 10 recruits, and 6 commits in total in the top 50. That will likely wind up being a deep and fairly experienced team. If Kentucky brings back Nick Richards and Immanuel Quickley, that's going to be the best team UK has had in a few years.

Arizona is going to have three first round picks- Nico Mannion, Josh Green, and Zeke Nnaji. In total, they lose the top 6 players scoring wise on the team, including senior Chase Jeter. To replace this huge loss in production, Arizona is bringing in the #41 recruiting class and Georgetown transfer James Akinjo. They should be pretty bad next year.

Kansas could either be pretty good or in danger of losing out on the Big12 title for the 2nd time in 3 years. They graduate Udoka which is a huge loss, but they will likely also lose Devon Dotson. If he returns they will be pretty good, but if he doesn't, they're going to struggle. Additionally, it's possible sophomore wing Ochai Agjabi could leave early. With just the #16 recruiting class coming in and no point guard to replace Dotson, Kansas could be in trouble next year. Kansas hasn't been recruiting very well the last few years and it appears they might be running into some problems beginning as early as next year.

Virginia graduates Diakite and Braxton Key which are big losses, but they return everyone else including Jay Huff, and Kihei Clark, who will probably be one of the nation's best players next year. Virginia also returns that dude from Italy and the freshman Casey Morsell. Those are 4 key returning pieces for Virginia, and they are also bringing in a very good recruiting class, especially for UVA standards. The three man class features #40 Jabri-Abdur Rahim who is a wing player and #60 overall Reece Beekman who is a point guard. This is an infusion of talent for UVA. And most importantly, their biggest recruit is Sam Hauser who will be eligible next year after sitting out a year transferring in from Marquette. This Cavalier team is clearly the ACC pre-season favorite and a top 5 team.

Texas Tech should be very good next year. They will likely lose freshman Jahmius Ramsey to the NBA, but their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th leading scorers all return. Their 5th leading scorer graduates, along with Chris Clarke the transfer from VT. In total they will lose three players (barring transfers) and they have the #11 recruiting class coming in which has three 4-star commitments.

Baylor is a team which could be very good next year. I have no idea how their players project for the NBA, but on paper they return their top 3 scorers, all guards, and they graduate scorers #4 and 5. They have the #15 recruiting class coming in which features two 4-star prospects, including a center which they seem to need. They also have two transfers who sat out this year which are eligible next year. A 6'8 big man from UNLV, and Adam Flagler who averaged 16ppg and shot 39% from 3 and 84% from the FT line at Presbyterian.

West Virginia returns 4 of their top 5 scorers and they have a lot of versatility and size and they have a 4-star forward coming in, and a JUCO guard.

Assuming Devon Dotson goes pro, the three teams above should all finish higher than Kansas in the Big 12 standings.

I think college basketball will be much better as a whole. We were spoiled by some really good teams in 2018-2019 but should be a step in the right direction next year.

If Devon Dotson returns, then Tre Jones is returning.

The extra year of eligibility is becoming pretty popular.

Of course we don't have anyone worth a damn who would take advantage of it except J-Rob.

Kansas would return Azubuike, surely.

Yeah the extra year of eligibility would definitely hurt us. We need the post depth that Javin and Justin would provide, but it's not worth other programs getting key players back. Virginia would certainly bring back Diakite and Braxton Key, which would surely be a great basketball team and potentially undefeated considering the new pieces they have coming in.

Kansas would return Azubuike, and it would be totally unsurprising if Michigan State brought back Cassius Winston.

Reading the tea leaves, I think Tre is gone no matter what. I don't think he's returning to school next year even if he doesn't get a first round guarantee.

Welp.

Should be a good year for basketball next season. Lots of stacked mid-majors, specifically.

Could be all-time chaos in March.

That's spring sports which missed practically their whole season, basketball is winter, which is what they are discussing. I'm inclined to think they aren't going to grant anything when 90% of the season was completed and more than half of teams missed at most 1-3 games.

Yeah, I was just assuming they're going to grant it since everyone seems to be in favor.

You could be right.

As a college basketball fan, I would like to see them allow it. As a Duke fan, it doesn't benefit us at all so I hope it doesn't happen.

Granting an extra season to seniors is dumb. First of all, as K mentioned, 80% of them wouldn’t have made the tournament anyway. But also, shit happens. That’s life. They played almost a full season and are asking for an entire extra season? What about a guy who tears his ACL in his last regular season game? Why are we not giving him an extra season because he missed his last postseason?
