When Appalachian State was the best North Carolina football program in the state ECU got good players that otherwise would have gone to the Big Four schools. It's much harder now when 3 of the 4 are going to bowls every year and the ACC is winning NCAA Titles.
 
ECU has really gone off a cliff since Montgomery got the job, though. I remember they were hanging 70 on UNC just 3-4 short years ago. Firing Ruffin McNeil remains one of the odder decisions I've seen a school make in recent memory.

Glad they hired Montgomery so he could sink or swim as a head coach there, instead of him getting promoted at Duke with no prior head coaching experience after Cut retired.
 
And Florida is hiring Dan Mullen. Nice. That's two jobs better than Arkansas that didn't take anyone Arkansas would want. We'll see who A&M and LSU get. Not a great year for a program like Arkansas to be hiring.
 
Why would Gruden want to walk into something like this? When they don't win, they may lynch him.
 
This might all be part of Master Gruden's plan. Convince the fans they'll be getting an atrocious coach, then swoop in to save the day and be loved even more than he already would have been.

Disastrous hire for them. They'll never be good until the booster war is resolved/Jimmy goes to prison.
