dkst can probably attest to this being from Malaysia, but some of the cuisines from SE Asia have been heavily influenced by European culinary traditions, particularly those countries/areas that were colonized by France.
True. There's been some Portuguese and Dutch influence in southern Malaysian cuisine. The biggest influence on our cuisine was the blending of Indian and Arab spices with Chinese recipes that grew out of the country's beginnings as a seaport between both.

I am speaking mainly of cooking techniques.

Well, the ingredients and the recipes have been passed along through the years and they reflect those times, so the food prep and cooking has followed likewise. This is of course specific to where I'm from (and Singapore, too).

Yes, I am not familiar with the junction of Arab and Asian influences on the Malaysian cuisine, thus I was trying to limit the scope of what I was referring to. The most similar comparison we have in the USA is very clearly Cajun food. The French influence on cooking methods is evident, while the flavors are uniquely regional.

And it's not just the flavors that are regional in Cajun food, but the ingredients (though there is a lot of African influence on both, due to many of the recipes originating in kitchens run by slaves).

Wine night was really champagne night. Took a while but sufficently drunk.

Anyone use the Untappd app for beer? I like it a lot. Has given me a lot of good ideas.

I use it. Great app. You can even get information on events going on around you and alerts on when beers show up in your area.

Growing up I thought Zima must be the height of luxury with all the advertising on TV. By the time I was old enough to drink it has been discontinued.

Haha I can safely say Zima has never graced my lips. If I am not drinking craft beer I am drinking bourbon.

Smirnoff Ice, Jack Daniels Downhome Punch, or some shitty vodka mixed with any kind of fruit juice - usually Hawaiian Punch - is all I drank in high school. One time a drank a little and touched a girl's boobs UNDER THE BRA!

Ah, good times.

My first beer was a warm ass end of the keg natty light. Early in college I jumped on the 40 train due to low cost. Even worked in some Cisco but the cracked out drunk was scary. Finally settled on the $8 cases of Coors or South Paw until graduation.

I got some Anderson Valley beer which was mentioned in this thread. Winter Solstice. It's great. A little sweet, the caramel flavor is strong.

I'm loving Rogue Hazelnut Brown Ale even more. Nut brown ales are my favorite type of beer, though, so take it FWIW. This is among the best I've ever had.

This is my wife's favorite beer as well.

I love sweet josie brown too, it's another you can find in this area pretty reliably.

Yes! This is another I should have listed in my go-to beers (though only when I'm in the Triangle).

I have Shotgun Betty from Lonerider in the kegerator right now. Also good.
