I usually find Taylor Swift really boring, but I like her new single. It's probably because it's ripping off Lana Del Rey.

One of my employees recently asked me an interesting question, which I'm going to share here in the hopes of starting a cool conversation.

Her question: What one band would you most want to see live?

The rules are that the band/performer must still be alive and it must still be possible for them/he/she to perform.

Her pick- Elton John
My pick- Sonic Youth

In my top 3 I would love to see Radiohead play anything from OK Computer to In Rainbows straight through or The Strokes play Is This It? Top of the list would be My Bloody Valentine.

My first answer was Radiohead. But I just keep coming back to Sonic Youth.

I'm not sure that Sonic Youth's musicianship is good enough that I'd want to see them live.

I think my pick would be Bjork. Maybe Muse. Their live shows look incredible.

I think getting to see m83 after Hurry Up, We're Dreaming came out will probably live on as my personal favorite act I ever actually got to see in person. Built to Spill is up there too just because I seem to constantly circle back to so many of their albums so getting my ears blasted for 2.5 hours was a real treat.

I saw Built to Spill play Keep It Like a Secret front to back at Riot Fest in 2017.

Every live show that I count as a personal fave are a marriage between the act and the venue.

The list:
Pixies and Love and Rockets/William and Mary Hall 1987
Iggy Pop and the Pretenders/William and Mary Hall 1987
REM/William and Mary Hall 1987/8
Grateful Dead/Cal Expo 1989
Formerly The Warlocks/Hampton Coliseum 1989
Yo La Tengo/William and Mary Student Center 91-2?
Nirvana/William and Mary Hall 92-3?
Green Day/Boathouse 1999/2000
Lyle Lovett and His Large Band/Portsmouth Amphitheater 2000/2001
Wolfmother/National Theatre Raleigh 2007?
Smashing Pumpkins/Norva 2011?

@torontoduke welcome back buddy, and great pick.

I think all the best shows I've seen have been "indie" bands. I can't afford arena concerts and that's not really my jam anyway. Would make an exception for a few artists.

My best shows:

Mr. Bungle - Cat's Cradle, Carrboro, NC, 1999
Archers of Loaf - Cat's Cradle, 1998
Jawbreaker - Riot Fest, Chicago, 2017
NOFX - Ziggy's, Winston Salem, NC, 1997?
Cloud Cult - Thalia Hall, Chicago, 2016
Dismemberment Plan - Go! Rehearsal Studios, Carrboro, 2000

I'm going to add to this later as more come to me. I am tempted to add Japanese Breakfast, Charly Bliss, Mitski, Hop Along, and Bracket, but I saw all of those in the last few years and I'm wary of recency bias.

My fave shows:

Fugazi - 1995, First Avenue, Minneapolis
Prince - 2011, Air Canada Centre, Toronto
Wilco - 2008 (I'd have to check exact date) Massey Hall, Toronto
Rancid - 1995, Crocks 'n Rolls, Thunder Bay
Afghan Whigs - 1996, First Avenue, Minneapolis
Beastie Boys - 1994, Lollapalooza, St. Paul
The Replacements - 2013, Fort York, Toronto
X - 2018, Danforth Music Hall, Toronto
Bob Mould - 2016, Horseshoe Tavern, Toronto
Superchunk - 1999, Lee's Palace, Toronto
David Byrne - 2004, Usher Hall, Edinburgh
Pavement - 2009, Centre Island, Toronto
Strokes - 2002, orpheum theater, Vancouver (the atmosphere was special)

I'd like to add:

Thievery Corporation/Massive Attack Beacon Theater 2013?
