What it will come down to if we don't land Nichols:

Does K feel comfortable going with (Amile/Jiggy), Hood, and Murphy at the 3-5 when Plumlee is in foul trouble or out of the game. I doubt it. Not for a full season at least.

Its coming down to which big we take, not if we take another big for 2013

As of right now, Hairston's listed at 240. Amile's 195. I expect Amile to put on some weight, but I'm sure it'll be a process. I can see Josh boxing out college centers, but Amile should probably only be on the court alongside Marshall or Josh.

The worrisome part is we are used to saying Josh should only be on the court along side someone like Mason or Miles.

Now would probably be a good time for NOD to let everyone know that he is an amputee....But really that list is terribly depressing. I think we are definitely stuck in the "perception is reality" cycle of we can't recruit good big men because we don't have any to show off to recruits as being great. I hate to be that guy but....Shelden Williams graduated when the current class of HS Seniors were in 5th grade. We've kinda swung and missed since then. Obviously there are a bunch of caveats to that cycle, but our perception/reality of being a guard-focused offense really is going to keep hurting us for a while.

We got the 80th-ranked player in his class drafted in the 1st round.

If that ain't evidence of big man success...

Oh I agree. I thought Miles was in the 50s, but that's semantics. Even if it's incorrect in our eyes, the perception is still there in the recruiting world largely because Miles wasn't featured in our offense this past season, and he was largely drafted on his athleticism and upside, not his college production. That's not something that's easy to sell in terms of big man development.

I'll prob take crap for this but I don't think "Duke" did anything to get Miles in the 1st round honestly. His dedication to the weight room and his height and athleticism are the ONLY think imo that got him there. It's to hear it the other way but I'm not going to argue with someone on the basis that we turned him into a polished post player.

That's the thing, though. K looked at his skill set and, JUST LIKE LANCE, saw exactly what role he would have to play in order to make it at the next level. Lance was never going to be the #1 or #2 scorer or some major inside-out threat. So K looked at his length, his quickness, his general coordination, and realized that he was going to need to be an aggressive energy guy in order to succeed at the next level.

Likewise, K saw Miles -- a physical freak who does not have good hands and is prone to overthinking in traffic, and had him work TIRELESSLY on the PNR and had them put loads of time into trying to get his 15- to 18-foot stationary jumper for pick 'n pops. K knew that THAT was the role that Miles will need to play in the NBA, and that's what he focused on.

What K has figured out over the years is the way for a not-all-world player to have a successful career in the NBA is to have a specific niche to fill. Players who fit well-defined roles and skillsets can play forever in the league, because those roles have to be played by specialists.

And, lest we forget, Miles wasn't even close to an NBA Draft pick guarantee until he went to the NBA pre-draft skills camp (NOT the combine), and impressed them with his work in basketball drills. You know -- the kinds of skills drills that K runs like clockwork in practice every day?

Well lets win another championship with our best player in street clothes. Its worked out for us the last two times.

I think Amile is going to be a better post player than most give him credit for. He really does remind me of Antwan Jameson with his quick release. He just doesn't have much wasted movement down low. Yes, he'll need to get stronger, but I like his moves and skill set. I think the sky is the limit for me.

NOD, while yes those are all good points and make sense for someone who watches a lot of basketball and understands the nuances of why players get drafted, that isn't what gets it done on the recruiting trail. What gets it done on the recruiting trail with elite big men is showing how many touches a big man gets, how much he would be "featured" in the offense, and how quickly he can leave college and get drafted in the lottery. Hard to sell to a Julius Randle/Jahlil Okafor that 4 years of very hard work will get you drafted at the tail end of the 1st round with many less chances to show off your skills than say at UK/UNC/KU because Duke operates using a guard-oriented offense...

Again, we as Duke fans who spend a lot of time watching a lot of basketball and seeing what Coach K does with his players are not the target audience...high school sophomores, juniors and seniors who are hearing about how Duke has only had 3 big men drafted in the lottery in the last 16 years are (not a bad number, but again not what UK/UNC/KU have been able to do).

Get some size on him and I'm with you.

I would agree with all of this. And that wasn't my point. My point was that using Miles in regards to post player pitch is not going to work. K is the best at developing kids to play roles and then getting that kid to buy into that. no question at all there. The problem is getting top players in high school to realize they're not going to be focal point from day 1 unless they're really, really special.

lol. They should get their own racially awkward buddy cop spinoff.

“@AlexMurphy5: @Rodneyhood4 Manu, Shved from MN, CP, and his 2 teammates JJ and Dunleavy. C'mon bro” you tripping bro

Does this mean we can expect a lot of low percentage chucking with the occasional game-winning outburst from him?

Reading way too much into it, I hate that he likes Monta Ellis' game.

lol, first thing I thought too.

Also lol at how Murphy pretty much picked the only 5 white SGs in the NBA (even though Parsons is a SF).
