Eternal Feats of Strength Thread

Re: 2012 Fitness Thread

I'm getting fat. Need to exercise.

Re: 2012 Fitness Thread

Same here. I need to de-fatfuckify myself. I finally got my garage set up to start doing the olympic lifts again. Hiking around 10 mi/day the past two weeks. Adding a weight vest to that next week.

I wish I could afford bumper plates and a nice bar :( And a garage to use them in.

How do you find the time to hike 10 miles a day? And where do you hike?

Re: 2012 Fitness Thread

I go back and forth to lunch, down into and up out of a canyon. Then another similar trot in the late afternoon. Just walking everywhere. It't takes around two hours but I listen to podcast. Running would be quicker, but doesn't work with my feet.

I don't have bumper plates, just a simple 300lb Oly set from the sports store. Then a sumo rack (basically a chopped-off power rack) so that I don't crush myself. My mats are a combination of those interlocking pads from Home Depot and some worn out driving range mats that I rescued before they were junked.

Re: 2012 Fitness Thread

10 miles of hiking a day is intense.

I'll count all the walking I do around Duke as my exercise.

Re: 2012 Fitness Thread

That counts. Basically the same as running, just more time-consuming. I go down into there... and across.

Of course that counts. Waiting for my Fitbit accelerometer to arrive so I can quantify how much I walk a day.

Re: 2012 Fitness Thread

People get caught up in walking vs running, but at the end of the day your energy burned us mostly due to moving a certain mass (i.e. 'you') a certain distance. The cardiovascular part of it is only a minor contributor relative to that.

Re: 2012 Fitness Thread

Walking back and forth from the animal facility is quite the walk. Also walking from the neighborhood to the bus stop and then the bus stop to the lab.

Re: 2012 Fitness Thread

I started P90X again last week, though I took the weekend off. I've been trying to eat a bit better too, though I haven't been putting a whole lot of effort into that part of it. Still, outside if this weekend (when I was at my parents' house and knew I wouldn't eat as well), I pretty much was losing a pound a day last week.

Eating right sets everything in motion. Have around 6 meals a day. Breakfast, lunch dinner with small healthy snacks in between each. The tiny meals keeps your metabolism going. Don't overs stuff for dinner, stay away from fried foods. Drink lots of water.

This is the most idiotic thing I've ever heard. Go read a physiology book.

Staying away from fried foods is not idiotic *

Re: 2012 Fitness Thread

The Tar Heels beating the Bobcats is way more idiotic

I think I'll pass on the psychology book and will continue to do what works for myself and others. Thanks.

Re: 2012 Fitness Thread

Psychology? No, physiology. How the physical systems of the body carry out their work. It's calories in vs. calories out. It works for you and your fellow idiots when you're in a calorie deficit, whether you eat twelve meals a day or just one.

I'll be starting Crossfit and jiu jitsu in November...

I've been doing crossfit for about 3 weeks now and love it. Jiu Jitsu, if you are just starting now and have never wrestled before, it will suck a ton for the first 6 months. trained bjj for about a year and a half. Haven't found a gym that fits in with my schedule out here in KC so I'm just taking a break from it now.
