Player Ryan Kelly

Those are waaayyy more optimistic than what I have heard elsewhere. Interesting. Has Duke given an official announcement yet?

Yeah, the one bright spot is that Quinn has been bringing an intelligence and complexity to our offense that simply wasn't there at all last year when Ryan was out. I don't think he can make up for his loss completely, but that second half against Clemson was encouraging.

(And since Cook's usage is probably going to go way up in Kelly's absence, we're probably going to notice the crazy decisions and mistakes a little bit more now. Gotta be patient.)

Nothing official. What kind of timeline are you hearing?

Well, if he has to have surgery again it should be 6-8 weeks like last time. Of course last time there were not any games waiting.

It'll be interesting to see what happens to the offensive rebounding numbers, which everyone has been fine with neglecting since 1-in/4-out doesn't led itself to ever getting an offensive rebound. Jefferson is at 12.9% OReb and will/should probably be told to do nothing but stand around the paint, set some screens, look for rebounds and score junk points on offense, so I'd hope for ~15% offensive rebounding out of him in Kelly's absence. That's a huge bump at the position, and it would make up for some of the loss in all other areas. Most of the loss will be made up for by simply having Cook dominate the ball more as he rises to All-American quality.

On defense, who knows. I feel like Jefferson and Hairston should both be good defenders, but we'll see if someone puts out their Synergy defensive stats compared to Kelly.

With Ryan Kelly out indefinitely, Duke's defense could struggle. Opponents are shooting just 22 percent against the senior. And Kelly ranks third in the country in fewest points allowed per play (minimum 100 plays defended). Here's a look at where that puts him among 307 qualified players:

Player, Team Points allowed
Phil Pressey, MIZZ 0.47
Jamaal Franklin, SDSU 0.52
Ryan Kelly, DUKE 0.53
Archie Goodwin, UK 0.54

The only official announcement is indefinitely.

What have you been hearing?

This is not really related to Kelly but GFY... CJ McCollum may not return this season, to preserve his NBA draft stock:

Fortunately for us as Duke fans, no one in the NBA wants a 6'11" guy who shoots 50% from 3 and is a top 5 defensive player in college, so Kelly won't have this issue. They just want guys who are good enough to beat Duke.

Ryan's D is certainly underrated, if not overlooked by most folks

If a player who is healthy does not return to play, he should have his scholarship yanked.

Their use of the word indefinitely is interesting. I have heard from a few people that it could be anywhere between 3 and 12 weeks (aka season-ending).... Obviously this is just the initial thought and reaction, and he could improve more quickly than expected, but things were pretty gloomy on Wednesday afternoon.

This is going to force Hairston, Amile, and Murphy to step up big in the meantime.

That's kinda what I suspected. Another one of those scenarios where there are probably signs of inflammation in the same general area as the prior injury, and they're gonna rest it and re-check with another CT and serial exams after some rest.

Blech.

And I'd imagine that, if he does indeed come back, he'll be on the Seth practice regimen.

Looks like we'll be all-in w/ Alex and Amile...

Will we see some double-Plumlee lineups?

I'd be shocked to see it. Maybe if we played UK again without Ryan? Twin towers with no perimeter skills would seem to be the only time we'd see it, and we don't have that on the rest of our schedule...

If Kelly is really out for the season, I hope we build for next season instead of using the stopgap that is Hairston.

Two factors preventing this:

1) K is going to try for a title every year, no matter how remote the possibility.

2) The uncertain timeframe on Kelly's recovery.

The uncertainty around this injury is so frustrating. I sure hope it will ultimately be only 4 weeks as some media (CBS) have mentioned. Get back Ryan.

Not suggesting that Ryan's injury is a minor issue and Duke can maintain a high-level of success without him, but I am excited to see what the young guys can bring in a larger role. Murphy and Amile bring different looks.

I've basically already conceded that he won't be back. The way Duke almost hides injuries will keep several "sources" still saying indefinitely just like Kyrie's. It'll be 4 weeks every 2 weeks.

Kyrie had a different factor influencing his return, but yeah I've already let the idea take residence in my brain.

Seth Davis saying a chance Ryan misses the rest of the season, opts to get surgery and prepare for the draft
