We've won 16 of the last 18 games. Not bad. The only drawback I see, if Scheyer's style truly is to slowly feel out his team, is the seeding disadvantage. Because the conference is so weak, we really handicap ourselves by not playing our best during the OOC part of the schedule.

The early December swoon that stood in for the typical January one just killed us this year. Back to back Q3 losses to Arkansas/GT. The same week Elko left in the dead of night for A&M. Fuck it forever.

GT is down to 146 on KP now, making it our worst loss in the last 20+ years. Somehow the Jackets also hold wins over Clemson and UNC. Truly a bizarre team.

I know Tyrese hasn't been amazing, but I still feel like losing him in the first minute of that GT game was the main reason we lost that one. At that point in time he was still our lead ball handler. He really isn't anymore, so we can survive better without him now. But the minute he went out, they went on that big run. We spent the rest of the game fighting back. I know we took the lead and still should have won. But if he's in the game maybe we're up 10 near the end instead of up four.

I also think you can chalk the Pitt loss up to injury too. If we were 23-3 right now, every pundit in the country would be fawning over Scheyer. We'd also have the ACC regular season basically locked up.

Well that was fucking awesome.

Second half, we did pretty much everything well, but Miami was also broken and had given up by that point (which is great to make happen in a conference game, don't get me wrong).

I thought the first half defense was as good as we've looked all season though, even when Miami wasn't playing awful. Given our personnel constraints, it was basically perfect.

I also really liked how intentional we clearly were on hitting Flip on the short roll every time it was there. "Only" 4 assists but it felt like a lot of our open shots started with him making the right quick read and kicking off good ball movement, and we really only tried to post him up a couple times, usually off a switch.

Nice gameplan on both ends, and executed nearly perfectly. No notes.

Flip in the short roll isn't always great, but it's a hell of a lot better than Flip at the top of the key trying to take guys off the dribble. I thought we did way too much of the latter in the FSU game. Maybe with FSU's length they would have collapsed too quickly on Flip and he wouldn't have been able to make the right read, idk.

This was a great tram performance, but I'm not as confident we've turned some corner as many of you seem to be.

I thought the defense was well conceived and executed and I was really impressed with:
The way Flip contested
The way the top 8 players rotated
The doubles up top and how disruptive it was

The offense was crisp ball movement and extra passes and just generally lovely to watch.

However, this boiled down to Duke being scorching hot from 3. Duke isn't going to lose if they can hover around 50% from 3.

We know they are going to have some mediocre games from 3.

My two main takeaways from this game:

1) Norchad Omier has the best hair Duke has faced this season. Incredible hair game.

2) And not to brag or anything, but McCain dunks just like I used to many years and pounds ago - unexpectedly and barely getting the ball over the rim after a big running start.

Other ACC teams's
This is the time of year where I start to look at Torvik data for cherry-picked dates, and sure enough, Duke is #3 since the morning after the UNC game.
The seven next-best ACC teams in that same 2.5 week span:
#11 Wake
#12 Clemson
#33 Virginia Tech
#51 Pitt
#56 UNC
#84 Notre Dame
#85 UVA

The sound the rims made in this game makes me want to vomit. Miami deserves their injuries for tightening their rims too much.

Yeah, the context for anything this season is still that we're more or less beating up on a midmajor conference, and we weren't competitive against the only solid tournament team we've played this calendar year. Could definitely have a reality check in the first weekend again.

But hey, gotta enjoy the good moments while we can.

The conference sucks, but we've won 16 of 18 and we've looked especially good on both ends since the UNC game. It's about how we're playing RELATIVE TO our competition.

How much different would you feel if we'd beaten Pitt and GT and were sitting at 23-3? Heck, we could easily have won the AZ game too. The thing about this Duke team is they're really good at shooting. I would expect good shooting games to be more the norm than not.

We also won a bunch of games during that stretch where we shot poorly from three.

I think you're giving undue weight to the early stretch. In fact, I'm not sure there was even a "corner" to turn. We've had horrible continuity for most of the season. All of our losses besides UNC have been coin-flip affairs. At UNC, we lost a single five-minute stretch badly.

Feels like you're finding a way to dismiss what's actually a larger sample size at this point.

To be clear, I don't suddenly think we're a title contender. But we're pretty clearly a much better team than we were two months ago.

Our best hope for the tournament is just going nuts from three for a few weeks. Those peak Nova teams did it, UNC did in 2022, Miami last year, etc. If a few of our shooters get on heaters, we could conceivably go deep.

The only downside from this game was that we were atrocious on the defensive glass (64%). Miami had 16 offensive rebounds. There were possessions where they got 2-3 offensive rebounds. They had 15 second chance points, otherwise our defense would have looked even better.

Norchad should pursue a career in modeling or porn. In my objective opinion, he is a beautiful example of Man.
