Duke Recruiting General Discussion

We certainly could use Nichols big time so that MP3 isn't the only legit inside man we have for a few years. Many of the recruiting analysts think JP and Randle are interchangeable. JP has said he expects to play some 4 wherever he goes. He could be the Lebron to our Duke much like the real Lebron was to Team USA. I guess what I am getting at is while of course we could use JP big time we most certainly NEED Nichols.

Logically, a one-and-done wouldn't make someone transfer. Logically, Gbinije shouldn't have transfered either.

But there's definitely an immediate gratification element in our culture right now. More important than speculating about transfers though is the fact that I'd rather see potential four-year guys get playing time early.

Okafor seems high on us. But it seems like big men always are when they are a year or two out. Then the negative recruiting really kicks in.
I'm not holding my breath for a big man recruit of that talent.

Tyus Jones likes us a lot. Will be interesting to see if we can land him and if those two really stay true to their pact of playing together. I know it rarely happens but them seem dead set on it.

I agree with this. We certainly need them both for different reasons but the good thing is there looks like a really good chance we could get both. That fuck in Florida is worrying me a little though.

Even if we get Tyus, I'd put Okafor as a long shot. As for Jabari -- I think it'll depend on his mom's mood on the particular day as to where he ends up. But of course we could really use him. Hell, EVERYBODY could really use him. His flexibility in terms of position will allow K to play whoever the fuck he wants with him, depending on situation.

MP3's post moves were far ahead of where both Miles and Mase were when they started. As long as he didn't inherit his brothers' apparent ability to become too scatterbrained/nervous in game situations, I think he has potential to be much more than a screen-setter/ rebounder. So, although I'd fucking love to have Okafor, I do think Nichols/MP3 can be a damn good combo.

I'm interested to see what direction Marshall goes. I've watched him play ever since he was a freshman at Christ School with Miles and Mason. He was so incredibly awkward back then I never thought he'd amount to much. But Dave Telep swore to me and a few others that Marshall would end up being the best of the three.

He's gotten better every single time I've watched him play since then. He's most comfortable, oddly enough, getting the ball on the block and using a lefty hook over his right shoulder. He's right handed so not sure why he always looks so much more comfortable with his left hand hook as opposed to one with his right hand but that's what I've gathered.

Never been a great shot blocker but he'll be physical in the paint and make guys work. A pretty solid rebounder but he's a little awkward and uncomfortable when he looks to outlet the ball, often hesitating and putting the outlet man in uncomfortable situations.

If he'll just play within himself, do the things he's most comfortable with and the dirty work for now, he could be a really, really vital piece for the next four years and potentially be the most productive of the three. But that's certainly no guarantee.

So, ummmmm, if true, we are out of 2013 big men recruits.

Current roster:

Plumlee
Hairston
Jefferson
Murphy (spot mins)

Sooooooo....Ideas?

That’s certainly been the case for DeSoto (DeSoto, Texas) shooting guard Matt Jones.

This time last year, Jones, a Duke commit, viewed open gym as “anything but a time to work hard.”

“It was more like the joke around time,” Jones admitted. “It was the time to shoot some ball before we got serious about the season.”

This season, Jones, who will step into a leadership role, had an epiphany that changed his perspective.

“There’s no ‘before we start the season,’ ” he said. “The season starts once we’re all together on the first day of school at open gym. That’s the time where you learn about your teammates’ improvements so when the season gets here, you’re that much further ahead. That’s how champions prepare.”

That is the same thing I have heard.. I hope Dave was right.

Andrew Bogut is running an Australian basketball academy and is suggesting that NC State and Duke are both recruiting someone there.

Fuck Bogut. He said a BLUE team and seemed to imply Duke but it looks like it may also be UNC recruiting Dante Exum.

Most likely scenario, UNC is recruiting Exum and we are recruiting nobody.

Dear lord, Dante Exum? Is he the test tube genetic experiment/love child of Dante Calabria and Cecil Exum, the dreaded UNC double legacy? We are DOOMED!

So how much of this Jabari favoring Duke stuff will turn out to be true and how much is simply just that his family is nice/flattering to everyone?

Would we go:

Cook
Hood
Murphy
Parker
Marshall

or

Cook
Hood
Parker
Amile
Marshall?

In either scenario we have great depth and size. The only place we'd be lacking is a backup center.

If we don't get Nichols it would completely leave the team open for a potentially disaster season. A Marshall injury or Marshall foul trouble would have us with a DII sized "center". The foul trouble could be a legit game to game concern based off of the Plumlee propensity for fouling. Also, teams would pound it down low to foul out our one center. I can already see that opponent strategy causing me much frustration throughout the entire season.

It's physically impossible for T-Rex to acquire reach in fouls.

I think Jabari would give us enough versatility and talent that we'd manage just fine with one center. Not ideal, obviously.

I'm not that freaked about about center if we get Parker. If we are 6'8 at the 2,3 and 4, with 6'8 Hairston and 6'8 Murphy/Amile off the bench, I think we are good, especially if we can sub in 6'5 Sheed at the point and play 6'5, 6'8, 6'8, 6'8, 6'8 if MP3 is out.

I'd rather do that than be 6'11, 6'11, 6'0, 6'1, 6'1 like last year.

That is true, but it is also hinging on landing Jabari. Also, the situation would not be remedied in 2014 unless we land Jahlil. If we don't get Jabari, Nichols, and Jahlil... we better hope there is a Justin Knox type player out there or academically eligible JUCO stud.
