Duke Recruiting General Discussion

Jahlil isn't the only big in his class. We have time there.

I do share your concerns on the 2013 class, however. We're about to be pretty much screwed inside if JP ends up elsewhere.

I think Jabari would give us enough versatility and talent that we'd manage just fine with one center. Not ideal, obviously.

That is true, but it is also hinging on landing Jabari. Also, the situation would not be remedied in 2014 unless we land Jahlil. If we don't get Jabari, Nichols, and Jahlil... we better hope there is a Justin Knox type player out there or academically eligible JUCO stud.

You said "If we don't get Nichols." So I was just responding to that.

I kind of wrote off Jabari a while back so in my mind I already have him labelled as a non-commit.

Which centers, other than Jahlil, have we made contact with in 2014?

Maybe we'll go all-out 90's Pitino and do some awesome trapping full-court press. Versatile lempf and depth like Sulaimon, Jefferson, Hood, Murphy, Parker, Ojeleye would just be perfect for it.

It would be fun as hell to watch, at least.

Coach K doesn't do Plan B big men.

Olympics style.

I think we can manage fine during the regular season, the only time I'd worry is in the tourney if we were to play a team with a dominant big when games become more grind-it-out half court. There aren't that many guys like that in college but we would just need Marshall to stay out of foul trouble and rotate over well if he needs help. Also I think another offseason of Amile getting stronger could render him a pretty good option at the center spot given his length.

K will never do anything gimmicky. Shaka Smart's "havoc" gimmick would be great for the new revolution in basketball (Lebron, Durant, Melo as NBA PFs, no true centers), and I'm indifferent between him and Stevens. Smart with Duke's roster next year would do really well. Off topic - Pastner is my first choice.

I wouldn't call a full court zone trap a gimmick. If you have length and great athletes and want to force the opponent into an uptempo game, it's a great strategy. We've all claimed how K adapts to his personnel. Either he rarely does it on defense, or the effects are more subtle.

If we land Jabari we could totally run Sulaimon at PG for a lineup of 6'4" 6'8" 6'8" 6'8" and 7'0".

Lol. UNC's roster has more height than the Bobcats. Auto-win.

Right, that's the point I'm making. Twice in 30 plus years you can definitively say that K altered his defensive philosophy in a radical way. The offense changes annually based on personnel.
