He's probably got the shady integrity that is needed with today's current bball climate.

Pastner. Killing it with recruiting and really knows his Xs and Os.

But is he also a leader, who happens to coach basketball?

Just hope Sean Miller never leaves Arizona and Creme continues to be good enough at Indiana. Then we'll have Stevens, Smart and Pastner ready to go for the not too distant openings at Duke and UNC, and probably UCLA and Kentucky. Any of those 3 coaches would be fine. 4 elite spots to fill, and I'd bet on UNC having the last open spot. Those 3 coaches should be off the table for UNC if Duke, UCLA and Kentucky are smart.

pastner hasn't done anything to deserve any praise as a coach. hes recruited a ton of talent, and managed to stay near the top of a second-rate conference. calipari was dominating, winning big ooc games, and going deep into the tournament. pastner has done the bare minimum given the advantages he has compared to the rest of cusa.

Agreed on all counts.

These guys (Stevens, Smart, Pastner) are all 35-36 years old. They have some more time to prove themselves. Pastner has been a head coach for 3 seasons - even the greatest coaches struggle to get to Final Fours in 3 total seasons of coaching. If you don't think Pastner is going to take all that talent to some #1-2 seeds and Final Fours within the next 5-10 years (the amount of time Duke has to figure out who will replace K), then you are right to dismiss him as anything more than an average coach. I'm projecting that he makes some Final Fours over the next 5-10 years when I think of him as a top candidate.

I haven't really followed Pastner's recruiting. Is he trending upward, or was he always bringing in talented players?

I still think an assistant or someone in the family gets heavy consideration.

I think Stevens is at a crossroads where from ages 35-45, he either proves that Butler's back to back title games was lightning in a bottle like Donovan's back to back titles, or he shows he can turn Butler into Gonzaga at its peak. Turning Butler into a consistent top 8 seed in the NCAAs is an incredible accomplishment. Raising the level of play of the entire Horizon would be even better, like Gonzaga did with the WCC.

Smart caught lightning once and will need to do it again and/or build a consistent winner in his solid conference, but players seem to love him and his style is fun to imagine at Duke.

Pastner simply has to keep doing what he's doing and get better NCAAT results. He had the 8th best team in the country last season and got jobbed by seeding, having to face the 14th best team in an 8 vs 9 matchup. Memphis vs St. Louis was probably the strongest 8 vs 9 matchup of all time.

If any one of these guys takes over at Duke, we will have them for 25+ years. That's a long time to never have to worry about shitty transition periods.

I think the pick will ultimately be Collins or Wojo, and we have to hope UNC stays in the family as well.

If Dawkins gets any kind of consistent NCAAT success, I think he'll be the favorite.

"Hey, so I know 8 of the biggest programs have been going after you for a while, but I just wanted to let you know we have a spot for you at Duke, now that our first few options have turned us down."

Ok so I will put you down as a no.

Well, if there's one thing we've learned from every recruit ever, it's that it doesn't matter how long you recruit them or how much love you show them. Not that I think it's at all likely, but it doesn't sound like Dakari Johnson would necessarily be much of a step down from Okafor if we tricked him into coming here.

I just say fuck it, pull in Jabari, and roll out Cook, Sulaimon, Hood, Jabari, Jefferson next season and play that hand.

I'm all aboard the Sulaimon, Hood, Jabari, Jefferson, Plumlee train (though I do hate the thought of having yet another converted SG at point).
