Player Sean Stewart

Yeah, I thought the defense looked just fine with him out there. Flip probably gets away with that travel, too.

Stewart 18 minutes
Young 9 minutes

Outside of FT, Mitchell was good tonight

something to make the old heads happy. his rebounding effort is noticeable.

There is some possibility this may not hold up as he gets more minutes against real competition.

However, it’s reasonable to predict Stewart will be Duke’s most numbers-friendly (not best or most important) player and a 1st round pick by season end. He’s 18 and this draft is going to be historically bad, plus the main thing he needs to work on to become a better pro prospect (3pt range) is something that probably won’t get better faster than his age hurts him.

If Scheyer can somehow (1) get Stewart to keep playing like this against good teams, thereby playing a big role in helping Duke (2) win a national title, while (3) sandbagging Stewart enough to not want to go pro after winning a national title and putting up 30+ PER/50+ net efficiency rating, then Scheyer will be the best coach in college basketball.

Can you imagine a starting lineup of Stewart/Flagg/Evans/Foster/McCain next year? With a Ngongba/Reeves/Power/KK/Harris/Schutt off the bench.

It’s a rough look for Scheyer, whatever the reason really is.

He might suck, but Scheyer should consider proving it to everyone so he’s not thought of as an idiot. It would take 2-3 games of solid minutes against good teams, and then everyone would see how terrible Stewart is and get off this train of bashing Scheyer for not playing him. Duke would probably lose those games anyway, so there’s not much to lose from Scheyer’s perspective.

Unfortunately the writing is on the wall for a transfer after the season. With Flagg, Dongbro, Maluach, Reeves and Mitchell all on the roster next season, I agree with Scheyer’s approach on Stewart. Either be nearly perfect or develop 40% 3pt range, or make way.
